Results of the Advisory Board Results and Recommendations of the Austrian Board for Radioactive Waste Management
The Austrian Board for Radioactive Waste Management - Advisory Board - was commissioned by the Federal Government to advise it on matters relating to the implementation of the National Programme for the Management of Radioactive Waste. As a first step, the Advisory Board was given a mandate to prepare the following four points:
- Point 1: Radioactive Waste in Austria: Survey of the Status Quo
- Point 2: Analysis of the Options for Final Disposal
- Point 3: Framework for Public Participation
- Point 4: Development of a Timetable for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste
The results of the work of the Advisory Board are based on discussions and presentations held during the meetings of the Advisory Board and its committees, as well as on commissioned reports on various topics, study trips carried out and exchanges of experience with other countries.
In total, the Advisory Board developed 20 recommendations containing initial proposals for the implementation of the final disposal of radioactive waste in Austria, taking technical, economic, and societal aspects into account.
The final report summarising the results of the Advisory Board’s 2021–2025 mandate was presented on 8 October 2025 to Secretary General Dr. Abentung, representing the Federal Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management.
Attached to the final report are a compilation of recommendations, a participation concept, and a timetable and roadmap.
